NZEI remains staunch

On close examination of the Flyer, though, I found there had been no change in the organisation's position. In one way that was the problem. The consensus now amongst the opponents of national standards is that the flaws are irreconcilable and the whole policy irredeemable. This means that the idea of a trial and 'meaningful' discussions with the government seems redundant and likely to draw teacher organisations into a trap. The NZEI, though, for legal and tactical reasons has to stick with that trial policy.... more

Well done that principal: but the Principals Federation falls into serious error

Using a simple ploy the Principals Federation has created the means to substantially change its policy on national standards without appearing, in an immediately obvious way, to do so. That ploy was to say that with so many principals accepting national standards, it had become necessary to take special steps to meet their needs. There is a certain surface plausibility to this. The implications, though, are dynamite. Through the use of this ploy, attention has been moved against the needs of children, to the needs of principals. In other words, moved against the effect of national standards on children, to ways to ease in national standards for principals; against opposition to national standards, to ways of implementing them. This was what the moot was about. But it all had to be muddied, hence the patronising, ludicrous, and convoluted Flyer. Most principals were always going to accept, or have to accept, national standards. To see this as changing the ‘landscape’ in a way that was not anticipated, is ridiculous; using it as an excuse for substantially changing its policy is unacceptable. The Principals Federation had a clear, consistent, and principled policy opposing national standards, then it had a moot, and now it hasn’t.... more

New book an inspiration

New book an inspiration. Jim Neyland's book: 'Rediscovering the Spirit of Education After Scientific Management' is an inspiration. Read it, and savour it, one chapter at a time, as I did. Your thinking on education will never be the same. [For your convenience, the book can be purchased by getting in touch with me: $54.95]... more

Quick response to NZPF Flyer No 5

Call for ERO boss to resign and a call to arms

He knew that the use in the national standards' legislation of the averaged figures the 2007 review report for all the curriculum areas (57%) rather than the use of the literacy and numeracy figures (around 90%) was a lie. It was a lie because he knew that the intention was to mislead.... more

We have a rogue organisation of state on our hands

As someone who worked in an education government department for 15 years, I am aware of the way expectations held by senior management can filter into the culture of an organisation and influence behaviour without direct instructions being issued.... more

Stoop must go: failure to discharge his official and moral duty

I accuse the review office of allowing the minister to tell lies and, in one notable instance, allowing such a lie to end up in the latest Education Amendment Bill. My strong contention is that if the 2007 figures for literacy had been in the Education Amendment Bill, ranging as they do between 75% and 93% (mainly around the 90%), then the Bill would not have appeared let alone been passed.... more

Great breaking news on national standards
