The Herald as Fox Television of New Zealand media

The Herald has demonstrated impatience with democracy by advocating obedience to the government as an end in itself; telling the big lies; turning issues between the government and critics into a battle of wills; commending unfairness; being careless of open government; scapegoating... more

Jim Neyland

Series against scientific management and for a curriculum- and collaboratively-driven one (Number 2 in this series). 'This writing', he declares, 'boils down to an assertion that there is in modern education a powerful tide of influence, largely unconscious that is shaping the form and direction of the curriculum. Furthermore, and critically, this is to the detriment of both education and the individual. Dear Jim: I have always liked your writing. I have quoted in my writing some of your article in 'Curriculum Matters'. Dear Kelvin: I was feeling a bit despondent today. Your kindness in writing has bucked me up. Out of office: Automatic reply - I have retired on medical grounds due to the onset of a life threatening illness.... more

Top academic skewers ERO report

The writing by Ivan Snook is used as a flag bearer for what will be a sustained series against our now normalised scientific management education system. The series will campaign for a trust-based system described in an introduction by Kelvin Smythe as curriculum- and colaboratively-driven. The present system is described as flawed, failing, ideologically corrupt, and spritually impoverished. The introduction says a successful challenge to scientific management would result in such things as a radical restructuring of the school external review process; an emphasis in evaluation on what occurs in learning programmes not what can be measured at the end; greater variety in how schools are organised and function; schools responding to broadly set national aims for education not tightly prescribed outcomes and objectives; a radical restructuring of how government contracts for research and curriculum advice are undertaken; different reward and appointment processes for universities; a free-standing advisory service; and, a redefining of the meaning of expertise.... more

Response to the two statements

Yesterday (November 24, 2009) two statements were released representing the national standards' positions of the primary teacher organisations, and four academics. While both statements are welcome, both fall short of what is required.... more

Stories from the front line

Here in Northland - the biggest area for the growing of cannibis - we face a huge problem with the children we have starting school. My teachers and I work about 60 hours a week to give kids the best we can but unless brain transplanting is on the agenda, no amount of national testing or focusing on the 3Rs is going to change that.... more

The time for decisive action is now

The welfare of our children, the well-being of our education system, and our professional integrity, demand we have a proper discussion about national standards. If the government won't, then we should. At the moment the decisive action I am calling for is a call by our teacher organisations to schools not to participate in arrangements for national standards prior to a series of nationwide meetings to be held in the New Year.... more

Important information for your parents

National standards started with a lie in a manifesto. In refutation to that lie, there is incontrovertible, official evidence that schools are doing exceptionally well in literacy and numeracy.... more
