Teacher organisations should take these cases to the commissioners

Be warned, though – there is another message being communicated. It is a message to schools, be warned, shut your teachers up, and yourselves, or you will be made to shut up.... more

The crunch is coming: do not worry, holding out has a lot to be said for it

The government announced this morning that it is changing national standards to a form of national testing. It is changing NAG 2a so that the results of standardised tests, at times set by the government, are sent directly to the ministry to be processed by machine to establish ‘standards’ (so forget OTJ). The power to set targets is to be given to the ministry, with the results to be published as league tables.... more

Academics take a stand

How John Roughan, editor of a metropolitan newspaper, used his position to set up a big lie

First, how to approach John Roughan. As with the Bill Ralston (‘What was that all about? Bill Ralston, the Devil, and the Listener’), to hit the mark, male curmudgeons need to be approached differently as against female ones (for instance, Joanne Black –‘Joanne Black of the Listener achieves greatness’). If you respond to their behaviour with any anger, you only feed their egos; male curmudgeons should approached as if their bad behaviour is no more than could be expected; a matter of mild amusement; perhaps leavened, at times, with a degree of sympathy for them being victim to arrested moral development. Above all, never address male curmudgeons directly about the matter in hand, they see this only as weakness; address any points to an imaginary reader just off stage. Male curmudgeons, in other words, should be viewed, and responded to, as eight-year-olds with wrinkles.... more

Principals approach all parents and explain: a) Your child’s achievement data belongs to your child and it is to inform you about your child’s progress – not other people b)Your child’s achievement data cannot be used in ways that could potentially harm your child... more

Is the Listener the National Party house magazine? Oh, and by the way, we have won over NS

Obviously, the strange and suggestive parallels are coincidental? How could they be otherwise? The Listener, by what must be a process similar to osmosis, has picked up in advance on the backdown by John Key on national standards.... more

Joanne Black of the Listener achieves greatness

Explaining his discovery of relativity, Einstein said: ‘I just ignored an axiom.’ Nothing defines creativity better than the ability to overcome what pertains with originality. Similarly, Joanne Black simply turned on its head the axiom that in education the welfare of children should come first and, hey presto, the birth of a breathtaking education idea.... more

Listener: The worst education editorial ever written

The editorialist still couldn't find what she'd been looking for: I politely suggest, though, that for closing the per capita gap between New Zealand and Australia she give Miss Smith in Room 1 with her littlies a break.... more

Under OIA, newspapers demanding schools give data

Further to the late addition by John O'Neill mentioned following, there are an additional two pages of further information, including a number of stratagems. This further information is place at the beginning of the posting. A response considering legal defences has just been sent to me by Professor John O'Neill (see at end).... more

Ian Leckie on this one has it terribly wrong
